Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement
I am Ms. Mortensen and I am excited to be your art teacher this semester! Art is a great subject and you will have the opportunity to learn new things about art and to develop your drawing skills, specifically in drawing the human figure. We will work with different art mediums, learn about art history, collaborate with other classmates, and learn about the elements and principles of art.
Respect is big in my classroom. This includes not talking while I am instructing and/or when I call on one of your classmates. You may raise your hand to speak. Respect your classmates, your teachers, and yourself. Using the art supplies is a privilege and if I see you breaking or vandalizing any materials, you will lose the privilege of using them and will do other work.
Good behavior is fundamental to your learning and success in this class. Good behavior results in music being played in class, adjustments to the seating chart, and fun activities. If you misbehave, you will get a verbal warning, a seat adjustment, and talk in the hallway. If it continues I will give a call to your parents/guardians, and detentions or referrals to administration if further action is required. As long as you follow the procedures of the classroom and work hard on your projects, you will succeed.
Due to the nature of the class, attendance and participation are essential to your success. Do your best to be here on time. If you are tardy, you will need to get a tardy note from the front office. You are responsible for getting any work you may have missed. If you know you will be gone for an extended period of time, please come talk to me so you don’t fall behind!
We will have daily sketches, drawing exercises and projects. I give you time in class to get your work done so there will be little to no homework for you in this class. If you need to take a project home to finish, you will need to come talk to me first before you do. If you are unhappy with a score you received on a project, you have the chance to rework it and turn it in before the end of the term.
Deadlines for projects will be given due to the progress of the class. Late work will be docked 5% for each day that it is late. You are welcome to come before or after school to make up work.
It is your responsibility to keep track of your artwork. There will be a place in the classroom where you may keep your work. Make sure you name is on your work! The main reason students get zeros on their work is because their name is no where to be found. If this happens, look in the no name basket first, see if it’s there. Put your name on it and turn it back in. This results in your work being late, so points will be docked.
Assessment of Progress
-Handheld Sharpener (optional)
We will have a daily sketch everyday for the first 5 to 10 minutes of class. We will make our own sketchbooks in class and we will start on the daily sketches once we get those made. We will then move on to instruction about the project we are working on. I will give you 5 to 10 minutes before class lets out to clean your area. If it isn’t clean, I will not let the class leave until it is.

Personal Statement and other items (optional)
-Avoid questions like, “am I done?” or “is this good?” when asking for feedback. Better questions would be, “what can I do to improve? “ or “how is my craftsmanship?”
-Be ready to step out of your comfort zone in this class. I know not all of you enjoy art or may think art class should be an easy class to pass, but you will be surprised what you can create if you are open and willing to try new things. We are here to not only develop skills to draw, but to learn how to think creatively, make mistakes, and try again!
